Japanese Electronic Pioneers BOOM BOOM SATELLITES Release New Album EMBRACE With Exclusive Remix for Europe

Marking their 15th anniversary, BOOM BOOM SATELLITES return to a European label with their eighth, most ambitious studio album to date: EMBRACE. Crafted in the wake of nuclear disaster, and followed by vocalist Kawashima’s own battle with a tumour to the brain, the release sees the pioneering duo pushed to their absolute limits. Match that with a cover from the Beatles and the pressure is truly on.

Masayuki Nakano and Michiyuki Kawashima (BOOM BOOM SATELLITES) originally smashed out of Japan in 1997 when their demo caught the attention of R&S Records. Implementing elements of rock, electronica, acid jazz and breakbeat, their debut album was a breath of fresh air and the pair gained many fans, including Melody Maker who labelled them as ‘new prodigies’ and compared them to The Chemical Brothers. Soon BOOM BOOM SATELLITES were touring the world and rocking European festivals.

Skip to present day and the pair are amongst Japan’s most respected musicians. They welcomed in their 15 years in music by holding a concert at the mighty Nippon Budokan arena, and broadcasting it live on YouTube, with a cutting edge 360-degree live stream.

BOOM BOOM SATELLITES’ affair with the latest advancements in technology does not end here. The music video to EMBRACE’s single BROKEN MIRROR was filmed live on Ustream and uses a futuristic ‘Scanning Control Live Projection’ system to create a dynamic and fascinating live environment that reacts to sound and movement. The track was also used as the theme tune to arguably Japan’s most recognisable and established robot franchise; Gundam.

EMBRACE also proudly features BOOM BOOM SATELLITES’ first cover song in their career; ‘HELTER SKELTER’, dragging the classic Beatles track into the 21st century with a heavy, electronic reimagining.

Masayuki Nakano comments, “It’s not an obvious choice for a BBS cover. The Beatles are one of music’s most iconic figures, so to cover one of their songs is not only an honour but also a challenge. It was great fun to push our own boundaries and leave our own mark on a classic song. It’s the Beatles, but not like you’ve ever heard them before.”

EMBRACE by BOOM BOOM SATELLITES is out now across the UK, Europe and Russia from JPU Records. The physical version of the album includes an exclusive BBS remix from upcoming British producer SHUDAN that has never before been released. The album is also available digitally in America, Australia and other countries courtesy of Sony Music Japan.

03. BROKEN MIRROR (Official Music Video)

Cibo Matto – Meltdown London Tonight

New York’s Shibuya-kei twosome Cibo Matto (meaning ‘Crazy Food’ in Italian) smash London tonight for the first time in 15 years! Yoko Ono’s London Meltdown festival to thank for it, running since yesterday until 23 June.

Cibo Matto formed during the mid 90s, alongside friends and collaborators such as The Beastie Boys, John Zorn and Beck. Since the release of their debut album Viva! La Woman in 1996, they have established themselves as musical innovators. Together, they made the iconic music video for their single ‘Sugar Water’ (below)- directed by the legendary French filmmaker – Michel Gondry. After the release of their second record, Stereotype A, the band stopped performing and recording, as Miho Hatori appeared on the Gorillaz hit single ’19-2000′ and the first Gorillaz album and Yuka C. Honda was producing records for Yoko Ono and Martha Wainwright.

Other acts to look out for during Meltdown include Deerhoof (21st), Bo Ningen (2oth) and music legend Ryuichi Sakamoto (19th).

Tickets for Cibo Matto range from £12.50 – £17.50 and are available by clicking here.

Tokyo all girl three-piece TOQUIWA have been tearing up the UK this month with their hi-energy J-punk while on tour supporting The Wedding Present. Now, due to popular demand, the support act have had to extend their time in the country to include one final farewell show – and this time they’re headlining! Taking place on Saturday 24 November, TOQUIWA will storm the stage for one last time at The Pipeline, opposite Liverpool Street Station in London, as part of Japanese rock night Japan Underground. Tickets are on sale now from WeGotTickets.com for £5.

Formed in 1998 under a different guise, the band came third in the 2008 global battle of the bands. Then called The Pinky Piglets, their Trojan horse assault of cute moves and explosive punk rock riffs leave an imprint on all their audiences across the world. The band have already achieved great accolades; they’ve hosted their own radio show on one of Tokyo’s largest stations, toured America, penned a song for a TV theme tune, played SXSW and have shared stages with punk rock legends Bad Religion, Guttermouth, Regurgitator and, of course, The Wedding Present.

“Of all the support bands we’ve ever had, I’ve never seen an audience blown away by the support band quite like TOQUIWA,” David Gedge enthuses when discussing the band – and who can blame him? From the opening dynamite of single ‘Tokyo Merry Go Round’ it’s clear that the band pair the riffs of Dinosaur Jr with the melodies of The B52s and add their own candy-covered sound. The band also pay homage to the label boss with a cover of Kennedy that has all the vitriol of the original but is, dare it be said, twice the fun!

TOQUIWA, it makes me happy. At least that’s how we’ve been singing the Terrorvision song since stumbling across this oddly named rock squad. Hailing from Tokyo, the band first had the opportunity of performing in the UK as support for  indie rockers The Wedding Present, who found the girls performing in the street while visiting Japan, and fell in love with their high-energy, quirky guitar sound and vocals.

Now the girls are back in the UK, clutching with them their newly pressed self-titled album, out now from the British label Scopitones, as well as the following tour date with The Wedding Present;

Come join us! There will be two live bands from Japan, karaoke courtesy of OnBoard Karaoke, arcade machines, fun, games and ace music until the wee hours of the morning. Plus, if you come in a decent costume, we’ll let you in for £5!

The bands:

This zany bunch of purple-shirt wearers are a catchy, high-energy avant-garde pop band from Nagoya, Japan. According to tour agecy It Came From Japan, Budo Grape is fronted by model and radio personality Quminco on vocals, and has Nagoya music legend Nagai (formerly of The Shockers), the group’s chief songwriter and guitarist. Check out a recent interview with them here.

Formed in 2001, Budo Grape released their first full album KOIBITO WA KOUSHITE TSUKURU in 2005. The album was a hit in the Japanese underground scene, and was followed by a number of other albums. The band’s cred soon spread, and they were invited by overseas fans to play in the United States, performing their debut live tour there in 2008 and releasing a best-of album, JUICE!, via a US label. The band also participated in a tribute album for French singer-songwriter Claude Francois, released in Japan as well as France.

New keyboardist Naho joined the band in 2012, bringing with her an edgy synth sound that has given the band’s sound a boost. They released their sixth album, KARE NO NAMAE WO OMOIDASENAI, the same year.

The band, whose members all have Grape as their last name, claim to come from “Neo-Nagoya”. They continue to tour Japan with their crazy live show and catchy songs, and in October 2012 they will perform their long-awaited debut concerts in the UK.
