SCANDAL - HELLO WORLD - Artist photo

Japan’s all-girl guitar group SCANDAL mark their international debut with a special edition of their sixth album HELLO WORLD, out now from JPU Records, including two exclusive bonus tracks for the CD edition.

Living up to its name, HELLO WORLD will also be supported with a headline world tour, including a show at France’s Le Bataclan in Paris on 25 April 2015 (tickets), London’s O2 Islington Academy on 26 April 2015 (tickets), Germany’s Weststadthalle in Essen on 30 April 2015 (tickets) – plus headline dates in the USA, Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan and a stadium show in Hong Kong.

Since becoming the crowned winners of the New Artist category at the 51st Japan Record Awards, SCANDAL’s momentum has blasted the girls’ cute, pop-punk tunes to the very top of Japan’s music industry. All five of their prior albums have made it into the top five of Japan’s official album chart, and 17 of their singles in to the top 20 Singles Chart – six entering at position five or higher! Their music has featured in a host of popular TV shows and films, including hit anime series Bleach and the latest Pokémon film.

HELLO WORLD sees the girls return with one of their strongest, most determined records to date and sees them collaborate with legendary icon Tetsuya Komuro; “the most successful music producer in Japanese music history” (The Guardian).

Sound good? You betcha! Plus Japan Underground’s resident DJ spinning a mixture of tracks from Japan to get you headbanging, fist swinging and having a damn good time – just a fiver on the door! See you there.

Girugamesh: MONSTER – New Album Out Now!

It took its sweet time coming, but Girugamesh‘s sixth album has now been released in the UK and Europe courtesy of Gan Shin Records. It follows in the questionable footsteps of the band’s 2011 effort GO. Sure, single COLOR had its moments, but for the most part the whole album went the way of INOCHI NO KI and stripped the power and aggression that powered some of Girugamesh’s greats over the years. If you were looking for something to rival Break Down, Owari to Mirai and our personal favourite volcano, you’d probably GO [ahem] right off this album… thankfully, MONSTER redeems all the wrongs of recent years and brings the electro-metal quartet right back to their former glory.

The album starts in standard Girugamesh style (like most of Danger Crew’s releases for that matter) with an upbeat electronic track that leads directly the first proper song. The transition is perfect and Drain sets the pace for the rest of the record, as well as Girugamesh’s progression. It’s clear they’ve been listening to a bit of Skrillex recently, but that’s no bad thing. MONSTER’s electronic elements are their most mature, proper sounding efforts to date. If you felt some of their previous efforts fell flat, MONSTER’s electronic parts have found that much needed oomph. Similarly, production this time round is perhaps at the band’s most solid. The double kick pedal gives the kind of thick, deep thud that very few Japanese bands seems to achieve, while the lower end riffs on guitar and bass feel powerful yet clean. In a nutshell; this is the Girugamesh album we’ve all been waiting for for years. Let’s hope it persuades them to return to the UK for another live show soon.
Our top 3 tracks: takt, Live is Life, Drain.

MONSTER Tracklist:
1. Intro
2. Drain (Music Video)
3. VOLTAGE
4. INCOMPLETE (Music Video)

Summary: MONSTER is a great album. If we had to compare it to anything, we’d say it falls somewhere between the GazettE and Crossfaith, while sounding nothing like either. Essentially it’s party metal with substance. 7/10

N’SHUKUGAWA BOYS Make London Return – 9 October

When: Wednesday 9 October 2013 (7pm-10:30pm)

Japanese distorted rock trio N’SHUKUGAWA BOYS are known for ‘shocking costumes’ and ‘outrageous live performances’ in their native Japan, but on Wednesday 9 October they hope to make a name for themselves in the UK with an exclusive, rare live set at London punk dive The Pipeline.

Described as 80s inspired rock that is ‘poppy and cute. As bright as Cyndi Lauper but much, much more punk’ (MTV 81), N’SHUKUGAWA BOYS see themselves as a combination of their favourite rock heroes. “We inhale everything out of bands like Joy Division, Oblivians, The Smiths, The La’s, Velvet Underground, The Cure, The Kills, Suicide, The White Stripes, Barbee Boys, The Drums and Iggy Pop. Take a deep breath, and exhale this sound,” explains panda-eyed member MARYA Love.

N’SHUKUGAWA BOYS members ditch the band rulebook by each member taking turns at playing the drums, guitar and bass parts. More often than not bass is left out entirely to make way for improvised dance and other stage-based misbehaviour.

Their eclectic style has rewarded them with many fans across the world, with the videos to hit tracks Monogatari wa Chito? Fuantei and PLANET MAGIC on YouTube breaking one million views each.
