If you’re in Brighton for The Great Escape Festival this year, and fancy an afternoon of quality live music from Japan, free sushi, and questionable tracks from us on the decks, then look no further than JAPAN RISING! Taking place at Queens Hotel on the Brighton seafront from 12-noon on Saturday 10 May, the event will showcase three acts from Japan, including the first UK appearance from legends Buffalo Daughter in 13 years. Plus, there’s our favourite new guitar slap heroes TarO&JirO, and award winning singer-songwriter Mayu Wakisaka too. In fact, we liked the last two so much that we’re dragging them to London on Monday 12 May to play again at JAPAN UNDERGROUND! (click here for all the details.)
Anyway, what exactly is JAPAN RISING? Here’s what It Came From Japan had to say;
It’s a big deal, that’s what. This will be the first time Japan has provided resources for a pop/rock showcase like this in Europe. The showcase is organised by The Foundation for Promotion of Music Industry and Culture (PROMIC) and Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ), and coordinated by It Came From Japan. It is part of a remit to create overseas showcase opportunities for performers at Tokyo International Music Market; further showcases will follow.
Held annually in Brighton since 2006, The Great Escape is Europe’s fastest-growing music marketplace and consumer festival. This year, 400 selected artists from over the world will perform at 35 clubs around the city on 8-10 May. It Came From Japan put on a stage at the first five editions of the festival, but this is the first time Japan will have an official presence.
Entrance requires a festival wristband, which have now sold out. Luckily, Buffalo Daughter will also play in London on Sunday 11 May, and TarO&JirO and Mayu Wakisaka on Monday 12 May.
